why does every one in nyc drive the same car?
I was in NYC over the weekend and couldn’t help but notice alot of people drove black cars that I am guessing are either Crown Victorias or Lincoln continentals. I know some are limos but I saw alot that were old and beat up driven by ordinary people. They also have some cabs of the same make.

The TownCars act as independent taxis. Most are flat-rate. The condition of these cars range from brand new to 25-years old. Regular citizens are generally not driving these cars. They are drivers.

These cars are taxis. The only way you will be able to tell whether it is a taxi or a personal vehicle will be by the license plate. Most likely every car you saw was a limo or taxi. These cars are quiet common on the east coast through NYC and Jersey.

Due to insurance and parking costs, and difficulty in even FINDING parking, it’s impractical to own a car in NYC. Most people take mass transit or, as you saw, Crown Vic taxis or Lincoln Town Car limos. Even taking a cab occasionally is still way more convenient, faster, and cheaper than owning a car.
The big Fords are used ’cause they are roomy and fairly rugged, fuel costs are only a small part of operating expenses so the advantage of the big cars seems to outweigh the disadvantages. Plus, NYC only allows a very few specific models to be used as taxis.
