Confused about NJ/MTA public transit– will this route work?
I am trying to get from Newark Liberty Airport to JFK airport via public transportation, and everything I look at has this long, crazy trip where I transfer trains 5 times and end up spending . Then, I typed it into the New Jersey transit authority website, and here’s what I got:
Itinerary from NEWARK AIRPORT N TERMINAL to JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Itinerary
Depart : NEWARK AIRPORT NORTH TERMINAL (07102)(On 107 NewYork – exact fare) 9:23 A.M.
Arrive : PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERM [41ST & 8TH ENT] 9:43 A.M.
Transfer
Depart : 42 ST-PORT AUTH BUS TERM(On NYC subway A (www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct))) 9:53 A.M.
Arrive : HOWARD BEACH-JFK AIRPORT 10:46 A.M.
This seems way too good to be true? Will this work?
and secondary question– if it will work, it looks like I have 3 or 4 hours to kill… is there anything along this route I could hop off and do/see?

If you’re going from Newark Airport to JFK Airport, here’s how to get there easily.
Step 1: take the Airtrain from the terminal to the Newark-Liberty International Airport train station.
Step 2: at the Newark-Liberty International Airport train station, purchase a one way NJ Transit ticket from EWR to Penn Station New York and take any New York City-bound (eastbound) train to Penn Station New York. A one way ticket on NJ Transit from EWR to New York Penn Station will cost you $15.
Step 3: at Penn Station, exit the NJ Transit train and follow the directional signs leading you to the concourse of the Long Island Railroad.
Step 4: at the Long Island Railroad concourse, purchase a one way ticket from Penn Station to Jamaica Station and take any eastbound train (except the Port Washington Branch) from Penn Station to Jamaica. A one way off peak ticket will cost you $5.75.
Step 5: when you get to Jamaica, exit the LIRR train and transfer upstairs to the JFK Airtrain. Take the Airtrain from Jamaica Station to all the terminal. The one way fare on the Airtrain is $5.
The total cost of this trip will cost you $25.75.
I hope this information is very helpful.
Good luck

Don’t take bus. Bus could often delay with Lincoln tunnel.
It’s mush safer if you take train and subways.
Best option will be by train.
Step 1: Go to Newark Airport Liberty Passenger Terminal and look for New Jersey Transit Ticket Vending Machine. Buy one way $15 ticket to New York Penn Station. $5.50 Airtrain fee is included.
Step 2: Board Airtrain Newark to Newark Liberty International Airport.
Step 3: Transfer to inbound/NY-bound Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line to New York Penn Station.
About 20 mintes.
Step 4: Follow sign to Long Island Railroad, and buy ticket at LIRR Ticket Vending Machine and purchase $5 MetroCard with peak ticket $8 or off-peak ticket $5.75 or Weekend CityTicket $3.50 to Jamaica Station. About 20 minutes.
Step 5: Take Long Island Railroad to Jamaica Station.
Step: Transfer to Airtrain JFK to your terminal.
12 minutes ride.
Subway option is not very good idea, especailly on weekend. There are lots of construction done during weekday late nights and weekends. It could take longer period.
Sure, why not?
And, you could get off the A train at W. 4th St. and stroll around Greenwich Village for a bit, and walk over to famous Washington Square Park, and also go see the famous corner of MacDougal and Bleecker Streets, where all the beatnik espresso houses and hippie folk music coffee houses used to be in years gone by. Or not.
But be sure not to take too long, because, don’t forget, you’re going to have to go through airport security at JFK, which is one of the busiest airports in the world, so it can take a while!
Good luck, and the link below is to a map of Greenwich Village showing where that subway stop is, and don’t worry, even thought it’s called "West 4th St." the entrance is on 3rd St.!…
